Five Installed into Endowed Positions

Five members of the Bethany College faculty were recognized today with endowed distinctions at a ceremony in the Academic Parlour of Old Main. Joining Senior Vice President Sven de Jong (left) and me for the presentation: Dr. Lisa Reilly, The Goulding-Woolery Professor of Chemistry; Dr. Anju Ramjee (The John F. and Evelyn Casey Steen Professor of Finance); Dr. Joseph Walsh (The Matthew Quay Ammon Professor of Mathematics); Dr. David R. Black (Sarah B. Cochran Visiting Executive in Residence); and, Travis Straub (The R. Richard Renner Visiting Scholar in English).

It was a special day for Dr. Joseph Walsh, Assistant Professor of Mathematics, who was installed as The Matthew Quay Ammon Professor of Mathematics at Bethany College. Dr. Walsh (with plaque) is joined by Sven de Jong (Bethany Senior Vice President), Paul Gaberson, Carolyn Walsh, and Kathy Gaberson (benefactor who created the professorship in honor of her late son).

Miss Madeline's Wise Words

Greeted at the doors of the T.W. Phillips Memorial Library by housekeeper Madeline Wilson.  “Miss Madeline” (as she is known to many) has worked at Bethany for 46 years.  She greets every visitor with a “Good morning, how are you?”  When visitors indicated “We’ll be much smarter when we come out this door,” she replied, “That’s why we’re here – knowledge.”  Great answer!

Dr. Janeshek to Head Writing Program

Dr. Jessie L. Janeshek, Assistant Professor of English, has been appointed Director of the Writing-Across-the-Curriculum program at Bethany. She holds a bachelor's degree from Bethany, an M.F.A. from Emerson College, and a Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. 

Humanities Department Ice Cream Social

Dr. Robyn R. Cole, Emeritus Professor of English, and Dr. Joseph Walsh, The Matthew Quay Ammon Professorship in Mathematics and Assistant Professor of Mathematics, visit with Dr. David R. Black, Provost, at last night's Ice Cream Social for English majors and minors, Writer's Club members, and all readers and writers at the Bethany Beanery. The annual event was sponsored by the Humanities Department.

Lunch with Student Athletes, Leaders

Enjoyable lunch at Christman Manor with members of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee of Bethany College. Outstanding student leaders representing their respective sports well. Athletic Director Brian Rose (right) joined me in hosting the event.

Talking Sports on WVBC

Enjoyable visit with Carlo Guadagnino and Bobby Bush on WVBC sports talk radio last night. Fall Bison sports, the Atlanta Braves, and the Pittsburgh Pirates were the topics.
