The President's Letter: A Beacon of Private Education in Virginia

A Beacon of Private Education in Virginia
October 2023
Dear friends,

Virginia Wesleyan University had the privilege of hosting Governor Glenn Youngkin and the presidents of Virginia Private Colleges (VPC) for its annual meeting last month. Our discussion with Governor Youngkin and Virginia Secretary of Education Aimee Guidera encompassed statewide educational initiatives and the pivotal role played by private education in Virginia.

Our programs continue to thrive and gain national recognition. We proudly announced our selection as one of six institutions in the Commonwealth of Virginia to receive the U.S. Department of Education's Strengthening Institutions Program grant, which is aimed at enhancing the educational journey of low-income and first-generation students. Virginia Wesleyan also achieved distinction in the 2024 'Best Colleges' rankings and was recognized in a national publication for our record enrollment numbers. As a testament to our commitment to excellence, we proudly named the David R. Black Institute for Professional Practice in honor of the program's founder and steadfast friend of the University. Additionally, I am delighted to continue to serve as the Executive Editor of the "President to President" thought-leadership series, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.

Over the past month, we have had wonderful opportunities to celebrate Marlins from all generations. These occasions include Founders Day, Batten Honors College Convocation, Homecoming and Family Weekend, and the Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. These events have allowed us to honor and celebrate our cherished Marlins, both past and present.

Furthermore, the VWU Board of Trustees is proud to welcome two distinguished new members to its ranks. Jaclyn Ruelle '04, Vice President and Head of Brand at Papa John's, joins our esteemed board. Additionally, Thomas Taylor, Ed.D. '00, has been appointed as Chair of the Alumni Council and will serve ex officio on the Board of Trustees. Jessie Dawe '08 will now assume the role of Vice Chair of the Alumni Council.

In partnership news, our collaboration continues with the City of Virginia Beach at The HIVE, which clinched multiple honors at the International Economic Development Council 2023 Excellence in Economic Development Awards. We are progressing with the future construction of the new Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art facility. Additionally, the "President to President" thought-leadership series is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, and I am delighted to continue to serve as its Executive Editor.

As we reflect on these achievements and the spirit of unity that defines our Virginia Wesleyan community, we look forward to an even brighter future. Together, we will continue to inspire, educate, and empower generations of Marlins to come, reaffirming our status as a beacon of private education in Virginia.

Sincerely,
