Nota Bene: Weekly Update

May 12, 2025

Good morning,

You made it, Marlins! Congratulations and best wishes as you finish up finals, pack up your residence hall rooms, and embark on your summer plans.

Baccalaureate will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Friday in the Joan and Macon Brock Theatre of the Susan S. Goode Fine and Performing Arts Center. This prelude to Commencement is a service of worship in celebration of and thanksgiving for lives dedicated to learning and wisdom. Dr. Courtney McBath, President of Virginia Christian College and founding pastor of Calvary Revival Church, will serve as our Baccalaureate speaker. All graduates and their families are encouraged to attend. (No tickets required.)

Commencement will be held on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. in TowneBank Arena of the Jane P. Batten Student Center. We look forward to the inspiring address from our keynote speaker, Retired Navy Captain Janet H. Days, the first Black commanding officer of Naval Station Norfolk, now the new director of Suffolk's Economic Development Department.

The David R. Goode Arts Complex sign at the entrance of the new Avenue of the Arts is now complete, marking an exciting milestone in the transformation of the arts corridor on Virginia Wesleyan’s campus. Final touches—including lighting and landscaping—will be completed soon, further enhancing the visibility and impact of this prominent campus landmark.

We extend our continued gratitude to David and Susan Goode, Jane Batten and Joan Brock for their visionary philanthropy and unwavering support of the arts at Virginia Wesleyan and throughout our region. Their generosity has helped elevate the cultural and educational experience for our students and the broader community.

I’m proud to announce that Dr. Kellie D. Holzer, Professor of English, has been named the Lambuth M. Clarke Chair in English Literature. A distinguished scholar and dedicated educator, Dr. Holzer brings to this prestigious role a deep commitment to the study and teaching of literature, enriching the academic experience for students across the University.

Last Wednesday, the Marlin Athletics Awards & Senior Recognition Banquet celebrated the accomplishments of Virginia Wesleyan’s student-athletes—recognizing their dedication, leadership, and excellence both on and off the field. As a Division III institution, VWU takes pride in offering a holistic student experience where athletics complements academics and personal development.

Among the evening’s highlights was the presentation of the 2025 Norfolk Sports Club Award to Hannah Smith. This prestigious honor recognizes Hannah’s outstanding contributions to Virginia Wesleyan athletics—not only as a fierce competitor, but also as a respected leader among her peers.

Congratulations to Hannah and to all the student-athletes recognized during this year’s banquet. Your commitment and spirit embody the very best of Division III athletics.

AROUND TOWN AND ACROSS CAMPUS

VWU Softball Claims 16th ODAC Title

Congratulations to our softball team for completing a 5-0 tournament run to claim their 16th Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championship title in program history and its second straight with a thrilling 3-2 win over Randolph-Macon College. Special kudos to Hannah Hearl, who was named the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament and to the All-Tournament Team. Lauren Bible, Samantha Dietsch, Mackenzie Myers, and Morgan Tucker were also named to the All-Tournament Team.

The team earns the ODAC's automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Softball Championship bracket. Way to go, Marlins!

From Marlin Magic to Disney Dreams

As we look ahead to next week’s Commencement, I’m reminded of the remarkable journeys our graduates are about to begin—like that of Corinne DeLawrence ’24. A lifelong Marlin whose VWU roots run deep, Corinne will soon head to Walt Disney World to take part in the prestigious Disney College Program. Her story is a perfect blend of family legacy, academic achievement, and big dreams coming true. Read more

Students Shine at Spring Undergraduate Research Forum

Our Spring Undergraduate Research Forum (SURF) continues to be one of the most inspiring events of the academic year. I was proud to see our students present so many innovative, real-world solutions—from inclusive emergency prep resources to sustainable tech upgrades and peer-sourced academic tools. Held as part of the University’s Academic Symposium, SURF showcased the very best of our student scholarship, creativity, and problem-solving. Learn more.

Student Delegation Represents Montenegro at National Model UN Conference

I’m always happy to see our students engaging on the world stage—and this year’s Model United Nations delegation did just that with excellence and poise. Representing Montenegro at the National Model UN Conference in New York City, our 18-member team joined more than 1,500 students from 50+ countries to debate issues ranging from climate change to human rights. Special thanks to James Moskowitz for leading this impactful experiential learning opportunity. Learn more.

Social Work Honor Society Welcomes New Inductees, Celebrates Legacy of Faculty Leaders

As we prepare to celebrate Commencement, I’m especially proud of the students and faculty who make Virginia Wesleyan’s academic legacy so meaningful. This past week, the Tau Alpha Chapter of the Phi Alpha Honor Society for Social Work welcomed five new inductees and honored two trailblazing Faculty Emeriti, Dora Dobrin and Sharon Payne, whose leadership helped shape VWU’s nationally accredited Social Work program. Congratulations to our newest Phi Alpha members for carrying that legacy forward. Learn more.

Rho Phi Lambda Induction

It was such a pleasure sharing remarks with officers and honorees of the Alpha Delta Chapter of Rho Phi Lambda, national honor society for recreation, parks and leisure service professionals. With Jill Sturts, Chair of Sport and Recreation Professions, and retiring 37-year faculty member Doug Kennedy, along with officers (back) Ethan Clark, Lauren Hedspeth, Stephen Schneider, and Everett McCloskey. This year’s inductees were Brian Madden, Tabitha Irving, Hannah Rose and Emma Adams.

Great Night at the Norfolk Forum

Annie and I recently had the pleasure of dinner at The Chrysler Museum with our final speakers of the 2024-25 season — Bob and Lee Woodruff. The evening included the announcement of the 2025-26 lineup. I enjoy serving on the Board of Directors of The Norfolk Forum, the oldest publicly-subscribed speakers’ forum in the country. My thanks to our good friends Blythe Scott, President of TNF, and Maura Murchake, Executive Director, for their outstanding leadership.

VFIC Gathering

I enjoyed a wonderful evening at The Country Club of Virginia for the Virginia Foundation of Independent Colleges (VFIC) Board and Donor Social. I’m pictured with Teague Avey, Virginia Chief Operating Officer of Brown Advisory, and Chris Peace, President of Virginia Private Colleges.

Late Night Fun

Late Night Breakfast is one of my favorite Marlin traditions. This semester, the theme was “Double Trouble,” where students, faculty and staff were asked to wear matching outfits.

Tariffs Could Add $500M to Cost of Virginia Beach Offshore Wind Farm, DominionTells Investors

Dominion Energy’s Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project—set to be the largest of its kind in the nation—continues to move forward despite rising costs driven by recently announced tariffs. In a recent update to investors, Dominion outlined how new import taxes could add up to $500 million to the project’s total cost. Yet, the utility remains confident in its timeline and long-term affordability for consumers. This is a significant development for our region as Hampton Roads continues to emerge as a hub for renewable energy innovation. Read more from WHRO.

Virginia Beach Voters Will Be Asked to Choose a Preferred Election System

Virginia Beach voters will have the opportunity this November to weigh in on how they elect their City Council representatives. In a 7-4 vote, the City Council approved placing a referendum on the ballot to determine whether the current 10-1 district-based voting system should remain or be replaced by a modified at-large system. This issue, rooted in important questions about fair representation and the city’s charter, continues to generate passionate debate. I encourage you to stay informed about this significant development in our region’s civic landscape. Read more from The Virginian-Pilot.
