Nota Bene: The Passing of Cecelia "CeeCee" Tucker

July 29, 2025

Dear VWU Community,

It is with a heavy heart that I share the sudden passing of Cecelia “CeeCee” Tucker. A respected civic leader, bridge-builder, and lifelong advocate for equity, education, and community engagement. A friend and colleague for over 20 years, CeeCee has been involved with VWU since 2021, serving as Special Advisor to the President after her retirement from ODU in 2022.

Many in our community will recall our announcement welcoming CeeCee into this important role. As Special Advisor to the President, she worked closely with University leadership and the President’s Council for Inclusive Communities to further our institutional action plan. “She has been a pillar of the Coastal Virginia community,” I shared at the time, “working tirelessly to extend educational opportunities to underserved populations in our area. Through her good work as an educator, non-profit director, and a community liaison, CeeCee defined herself as a leader focused on equity and inclusion.”

She was a light to all who knew her. Shrewd, yet always friendly, she was a force for good in Coastal Virginia with a career in education spanning more than three decades. She devoted herself to strengthening relationships between institutions and the communities they serve, particularly in Hampton Roads.

A native of Norfolk and a proud graduate of Howard University, CeeCee earned a reputation as a trusted advisor, connector, and mentor. Whether leading dialogues on race and equity, mentoring students and young professionals, or convening stakeholders to solve pressing challenges, she brought authenticity, compassion, and a deep sense of purpose to everything she did.

Her contributions have been recognized with numerous accolades, but those who know her best cite her quiet strength, unwavering integrity, and belief in the dignity and potential of every individual as her most enduring legacy.

Please keep the Tucker family and her extensive network of friends and colleagues in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Family will receive friends tonight (Tuesday, July 29) from 5:00-8:00 p.m. in the Student Senate Chambers on the campus of Old Dominion University at 1301 W 49th Street in Norfolk (parking adjacent to the Webb Center).

Sincerely,
