Our campus community is deeply saddened by the loss of Lt. Col. Brandon Shah, who was a familiar face at Virginia Wesleyan through the Army ROTC consortium. Based at Old Dominion University, the consortium also maintains an office in Godwin Hall on our campus, where he worked closely with many of our students.
Lt. Col. Shah was a U.S. Army officer and professor of military science at Old Dominion University. He was killed when a gunman opened fire during an ROTC class at ODU yesterday. According to news accounts, ROTC cadets quickly intervened and subdued the suspect, preventing further loss of life.

His VWU students described him as a supportive mentor—someone who took time to encourage them and who believed deeply in their commitment to serve our nation. His steady presence and genuine interest in our students left a lasting impression.
We are grateful for the time he spent with our community and for the guidance he offered to those preparing for lives of leadership and service. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Brandon’s family, friends, colleagues, and to the Marlins and Monarchs he helped to mentor and inspire. We also pray for the full and swift recovery of those who were injured.
