November 10, 2015
Each November 11, our nation pauses to honor our military
veterans. At Virginia Wesleyan, we are especially proud of our Marlin veterans
including hundreds of alumni, faculty and staff and more than 60 current
students who are taking advantage of the many benefits available to veterans,
active duty military and reservists at the College.
I am happy to share that Virginia Wesleyan has been
repeatedly recognized by U.S. News & World Report as a best college
for veterans and was recently named a 2016 Military Friendly School. As an
institution, it is important that we continue to serve our veterans and to
recognize them as valued members of our community.
If you have not yet had the opportunity to stop by the
Military Honor Tree on display in the Jane P. Batten Student Center in honor of
Veterans Day, I encourage you to do so. The display was created by our Student
Veterans Organization, a campus group that helps both former military and
active duty service members adjust to and be successful in college life, and the
College’s Veterans Benefits Office.
Finally, I invite you to join me and the campus community for our 2015 Veterans Day Ceremony taking
place this Wednesday, November 11 at 2 p.m. at the Campus Lawn and
Memorial Garden behind Godwin Hall. The
event will feature remarks by:
- Amy Rush, Advisor to the VWC Marlin Student Veterans Organization and the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) Marlin Detachment
- Jodi Chang '15 (United States Navy Veteran, philosophy and biology major)
- Kasey Dotson '18 (United States Navy Veteran, international studies major)
A reception will follow in the Barclay Sheaks Gallery inside
Godwin Hall. In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will take place in the
CMAC inside the Batten Student Center. For more information, contact Melanie
