I am saddened to share the passing of Betty Fraley Broyles on May 7.
Betty was the wife of long-time Virginia Wesleyan Trustee Tom Broyles.
Tom and Betty have been loyal friends and supporters of the University.
Following is an excerpt from her obituary:
Betty
Fraley Broyles joined her Lord and Savior on May 7, 2018. Born in
Cleveland (Russell County) Virginia on October 14, 1934, to William
Elbert and Genevra McComas Fraley. She is survived by her loving husband
of 63 years Thomas Clarke Broyles; children, Betty Page Ambrose and
husband Edward of Virginia Beach, Anne Proctor and husband David of
Birmingham, AL; grandchildren, Thomas Brooks Proctor and wife Ellen,
Grady Burns Proctor, II and Lane Jennings Proctor; sister, Frances
Howard of Melbourne, FL.
Betty's formal education began at
Virginia Intermont where she excelled in basketball, setting a record.
She also attended Randolph Macon Women's College and later received a
B.S. degree in Education from Old Dominion University. After graduation,
she taught in the Virginia Beach School System.
Betty was active
with the Virginia Beach Education Foundation, Advisory Board of Mary
Baldwin College, Virginia Beach General Auxiliary and Virginia Aquarium.
She was a member of the Princess Anne Country Club and was an avid
golfer. She also loved music and played the violin and piano.
A
Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 12th, 2018, at 2:00
PM, at the Virginia Beach United Methodist Church, 212 19th Street.
There will be a reception at the church following the service.
In
lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society,
Virginia Beach United Methodist Church, Virginia Beach Rescue or
