Presidents of the 89 United Methodist Church-affiliated colleges/universities concluded two days of meetings regarding critical issues for the Called General Conference meeting in St. Louis, February 23-26. The NASCUMC gathering is of great importance as the Church wrestles with questions that may affect the shape of the denomination. Pictured with Mark Hanshaw, Associate General Secretary, GBHEM, and Colette Pierce Burnette, President of NASCUMC. The Presidents met with Bishop Sandra Steiner-Ball, co-moderator of the Commission on a Way Forward, before passing the “Joint Statement of NASCUMC Presidents On the Called General Conference and the Subject of Human Sexuality.” The statement will be sent to the Commission and Council of Bishops before being released to national media on Monday. Drs. Burnette, Hanshaw, and I will be the spokespersons on behalf of Methodist higher education.
