Tonight we welcomed scholars from throughout the country for the final of three Batten Honors College competitions this academic year. Students joining us this weekend have distinguished themselves in many ways as we started with a pool of over 30,000 potential students, one-tenth of that group were deemed eligible in meeting preliminary requirements for the program, and only about 120 out of 30,000 were invited to campus for the three competition weekends. Only 3 % of those who meet the admissions requirements of the elite program will be admitted for seats in the fall class. This distinctive national-niche program is made possible by VWU Trustee Emerita Jane Batten and her late husband Frank.
