Nota Bene: Congratulations to the Class of 2021

Good morning,
It has been an unusual and challenging year, but we made it! We made it thanks to your care, effort, creativity and commitment. This has certainly been a year we’ll never forget. 

A special congratulations to the Class of 2021. We are all so proud of you and will miss you. Please stay involved as Marlin alumni. We want to hear from you and learn about all the wonderful things we know you’ll go on to do in your personal and professional lives. 

The celebration for the Class of 2021 begins Friday at 7:00 p.m. with our virtual Baccalaureate ceremony featuring our keynote speaker Dr. David R. Black, President-Emeritus of both Eastern University and Lakeland University and Executive-in-Residence at VWU.

We begin our Commencement exercises on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. with the Birdsong School of Social Science followed by the Joan P. Brock School of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at 11:30 a.m., the Susan S. Goode School of the Arts and Humanities at 2:00 p.m., and the D. Henry Watts School of Professional Studies at 4:30 p.m. VWU Global Campus will graduate at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 16. Dr. Timothy Carter, President of Boston-based environmental advocacy organization Second Nature is the Commencement Speaker. All events will be streamed live on our VWU Digital Broadcasting Network.

Dr. Black, Dr. Carter, Dr. Susan T. Beverly (alumna, educator and philanthropist), and Dr. Richard Ekman (President of the Council of Independent Colleges) will receive honorary doctorate degrees. Dr. Mark Hanshaw (retired Associate General Secretary of the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry of the United Methodist Church), Rev. Wayne Snead (Elizabeth River District Superintendent of the United Methodist Church), and Marie Porter (University Chaplain) will receive The Wesley Award.
