Nota Bene: Celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Today, on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, our nation comes together to celebrate equal rights and honor Dr. King’s strength, resilience and compassion.

The Virginia Wesleyan community will reflect on Dr. King’s life, particularly his famous “I Have a Dream” speech, today from 1-2 p.m. in the Pearce Hospitality Suite (view flyer below). Students from Dr. Linda Ferguson and Dr. Stu Minnis’s “Public Speaking” courses, and from Dr. Travis Malone’s “Advanced Theatre Seminar” will explore the ways in which the text speaks to our cultural context and how performances can inspire audiences to create brighter futures for their community. This Winter Session program is sponsored by our Offices of Academic Affairs and Student Affairs.

Our campus community will have additional opportunities this spring to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. The Center for the Study of Religious Freedom will host special events recognizing the hopes and continued legacy of Dr. King. “Building Bridges, Bridging Divides” will commemorate the 50th anniversary of Dr. King's assassination with events such as, “Creating a More Civil Society: Is M.L.K.’s Legacy Just a Dream?” a discussion moderated by WHRV's Another View host Barbara Hamm Lee as part of the Race: Let’s Talk About It Town Hall series (March 3); and the Justine L. Nusbaum Lecture “How to Be Less Stupid About Race: Racism and Anti-racism in Our Classrooms and Communities,” by award-winning writer, speaker and educator Dr. Crystal Fleming (April 23). Learn more about these events at www.vwu.edu/csrf.

We are grateful to our professors and students and to our Center for the Study of Religious Freedom for bringing these valuable offerings to our campus. I encourage you to take part in these special events as we celebrate the eloquence of Martin Luther King, Jr. and his vision for social justice.
