Attending the State of the Region
With Martha McClees, Executive Director of Virginia Beach Vision, and Jim Koch, ODU Board of Visitors Professor of Economics Emeritus and President Emeritus, at the 18th annual State of the Region this morning at the Westin Town Center in Virginia Beach. Dr. Koch has led this project since its inception.

campus flags fly at half staff this week, a symbol of sorrow and a sign
of honor for those lost and injured as a result of the horrifying mass
shooting that occurred in Las Vegas on Sunday. On behalf of Virginia
Wesleyan University, I offer my deepest condolences to those affected by
this tragic act of violence.
I had planned on sharing campus security updates with you this week, and now it feels more important than ever. It is critical that members of the campus community be aware of Virginia Wesleyan's emergency procedures and the ways in which we communicate important updates to our students, faculty and staff. Please take a moment to review the following methods of contact utilized during emergency situations:

Virginia Wesleyan’s Annual Security and Fire Safety Report for 2017 is now available online as part of the Safe and Secure brochure. This report contains information about campus security, statements about security-related campus policies, and statistical data for campus crime reports. Information on emergency response, evacuation procedures and fire safety are also included. Safe and Secure brochures are available at various offices and locations throughout campus, including the Athletics Suite, the Batten Student Center Hub, the Blocker Hall vending area, the Office of Finance and Administration, Campus Security, The Lighthouse, Hofheimer Library, Residence Life, and the Office of Student Affairs.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) will offer a presentation on Run-Hide-Fight next Wednesday, October 11. In response to an active shooter or similar crisis situation, Run-Hide-Fight is a tactic promoted and supported by government agencies and emergency planners across the country. This 75-minute presentation will take place at 3:00 p.m. in Blocker Auditorium. All faculty, staff, and students are highly encouraged to attend.
Please familiarize yourself with this information. Although the University takes every precaution to ensure the safety of its students, faculty and staff, we still ask our campus community to do your part in exercising caution on campus and off.

baby, and more in all things VWU—hats, shirts, mugs, scarves, blankets,
diplomas—all day tomorrow, October 4.

The Office of Student Activities will also host a Marlin Spirit Day Office Decorating contest on campus with a theme of “Blast From the Past/Decades.” In the running for “Best Door” and/or “Best Lobby” are John Aird in the Office of Information Technology Services, the Center for Enrollment Services, Center for the Study of Religious Freedom, Chaplain's Office, Evening and Weekend Program, Hofheimer Library, Office of Finance and Administration, Scribner Bookstore, and Office of Student Activities. Winners will receive goodie trays, framed certificates, and bragging rights!
The Marlin spirit will continue tomorrow evening with a Wesleyan Wednesday Singles Mingle from 5-7 p.m. at Mix It Up in Virginia Beach (co-owned by former VWU student Amberly Carter). Friday through Sunday festivities will include the annual Homecoming Parade, the Friday Night Flights Alumni Social at ShoreBreak in Virginia Beach (co-owned by JB Maas '01), the Homecoming Tailgate, inaugural Chili Cook-off, alumni and varsity athletic games, tours of the Greer Environmental Sciences Center, the Class of 2017 Tree Planting Ceremony, an interdenominational worship service, and more. Congratulations to this year’s Homecoming Court, seniors Wynter Bond and Armon Ardila, juniors Terra Caple and AJ Ramirez, sophomores Jayla Cross and Joshua Roth, and freshmen Cydni Young and Ryan Baldwin. These class representatives were nominated by their peers, and winners will be announced during the Homecoming Parade on Friday.
I encourage you to get in the Marlin spirit and participate in these exciting events. I look forward to seeing your photos Wednesday and visiting with you in person throughout the week and into the weekend.

Marlin Prestige Business Conference Lights the Future
Enjoyed learning more about the Fall 2017 Marlin Prestige Business Conference from Chief Executive Officer Kathryn Grainer and Chief of Staff Peyton Auxt. This semester's student-led conference will take place November 13-17 with a theme of "Lighting the Future: Finding Success through Ethical Business Practices." The President's Letter: Coming Home
We are now a little more than one month into the fall semester, one of my favorite times in the academic year as alumni return for fall sports and cultural events and remind us of our enduring and extended community. With strong enrollment and one of the most academically talented classes of incoming students in our history, we see much promise as we advance through our first year as Virginia Wesleyan University.
