Nota Bene: President's Environmental Issues Council

October 14, 2015

At Virginia Wesleyan College, the President's Environmental Issues Council (PEIC) promotes a strong environmental ethic and cultivates sustainable policies, practices and curricula throughout the College. Increased concern and awareness about environmental issues and global warming have prompted us to lead the charge in making the College a more environmentally friendly place with environmentally conscious citizens.

Through its broad membership, the Council works with campus leaders to address environmental issues on campus and to promote conservation and environmental stewardship among Virginia Wesleyan's students, faculty and staff. Additional information is available on our website at:

I am pleased to announce the appointment of new members for the Council. Membership for 2015-16 includes four members of the faculty, four staff members and two students. Members were selected based on their interest and expertise in sustainability issues and/or their ability to implement new initiatives for the campus community.

Through my involvement as a member of the governing body of the Climate Leadership Network, formerly the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment (ACUPCC), we have identified five environmental models/peer institutions that have an impressive commitment to sustainability and will provide inspiration for projects to consider for VWC. We have also begun research into sustainability efforts at peer and regional institutions.

We’re enthusiastic about exploring and implementing sustainability initiatives on our campus and in the curriculum. Special thanks to Elizabeth and Soraya for their valuable input and leadership on this important campus initiative.
