The
Virginia Wesleyan community will formally gather Friday, May 5, to
reaffirm our institutional commitment to intellectual curiosity,
academic excellence, and social responsibility. I invite you to join me
for Spring Honors Convocation in the Jane P. Batten Student Center (1:30
p.m.) followed by the 12th Annual Academic Fair in Hofheimer Library
(3:00 p.m.).
Honors Convocation serves to recognize students’
exemplary performance in areas of academics, co-curricular activities,
community service, and leadership. The program will feature the
presentation of various awards spanning Virginia Wesleyan’s academic
departments while also honoring students on the President’s List and
Academic Dean's List, members of honor societies, PORTfolio students,
Student Government Association, and the Class of 2017. This prestigious
ceremony, held in the Convocation Center, is a highlight of our academic
year and strongly speaks to our core values, academic quality, and
impressive level of student engagement.
Immediately following
Honors Convocation, creative student works and research projects will be
on display at the Academic Fair in Hofheimer Library. This year’s
exhibits will include a 3D printing demonstration with mathematics
students, a spotlight on service animals with sociology students, a
special presentation by “Model United Nations” students, art projects,
undergraduate research, study-away experiences, theatre improv, and
more. Our yearly Academic Fair is a premier Wesleyan tradition organized
by Hofheimer Library and The Lighthouse. It provides a relaxed forum to
learn about the many exciting ventures that students undertake every
day in our classrooms. All are welcome to attend—light refreshments will
be served, and door prizes will be awarded.
Congratulations in
advance to the many students who will be honored for their achievements,
and thank you to those who will proudly display their hard work. Among
the many benefits of a close-knit community like ours is the ability to
share so intimately in one anothers' successes. I look forward to these
events with great pride and cannot think of a better way to wind down
the spring semester as we move toward Baccalaureate and Commencement.
