Dear friends,
As we bring the fall session to a close, November offered moments of reflection, celebration, and shared purpose across our campus community. These experiences continue to build strong momentum as we look ahead to our transition to Batten University on July 1, 2026.
This season, our community gathered for two meaningful ceremonies reflecting our values of respect and service. We joined members of the Nansemond Indian Nation in the Peace Garden for a repatriation ceremony and land acknowledgment dedication, and later honored veterans at the Veterans Memorial Monument with remarks by Captain (Ret.) Brian Becker. Capt. Becker serves as Director of the NROTC Preparatory Program at VWU, mentoring future Navy and Marine Corps officers.
The Bobby Levin Art Exhibition and Scholarship Program opened The Art of Healing in the Barclay Sheaks Gallery, curated by Sarah Richards ’26, the first Levin Scholar. The exhibition explored themes of growth and self-discovery. We also recognized Alessandra Bados-Hernandez ’27, selected for the World Affairs Councils of America Student Scholars Program, building on her work with the World Affairs Council of Hampton Roads, a valued community partner.
Across campus, the Office of Student Engagement and Success, working with Counseling and Student Health, Financial Aid, Professional Development, and the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities, hosted programs recognizing the achievements of our first-generation students. The spirit of collaboration also continued through the Marlin Business Conference, which brought together students, faculty, alumni, and industry partners for a week of exploration and networking.
November was an outstanding month for Marlin Athletics, with women’s soccer, men’s soccer, volleyball, field hockey, and cross country advancing into postseason play and many student-athletes earning All-ODAC honors. Their determination and sportsmanship continue to make us proud. Notably, women’s volleyball hosted the NCAA Tournament regional for the first time in program history and advanced to the second round before concluding an outstanding 32–3 season.
Institutional priorities advanced throughout the month. Construction on the new Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art remains on schedule and within budget, with substantial completion expected in mid-December and an April grand opening planned. Preparation for the 2026 integration of the Sentara College of Health Sciences continues, and renovation has begun on the expanded Stephen S. Mansfield Special Collections and Archives, which will house the combined archival collections of both institutions. A visiting team from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges also completed its review of VWU–Chesapeake, affirming our commitment to expanding access to education and strengthening communities.
As we look toward a new year, I remain grateful for the dedication and spirit that define our University. Together, we continue to move forward with confidence and purpose.
Annie and I wish you a joyful holiday season and a bright beginning to 2026.
Sincerely,
|
