Dear friends,
As Thanksgiving approaches, I find myself reflecting on the many reasons we have to be grateful. From the traditions that bring generations of Marlins together to the partnerships that create new opportunities for our students, this season reminds us of the people and shared purpose that make Batten University such a special place.
Homecoming and Family Weekend brought generations of Marlins together to celebrate our shared traditions. The weekend also included the induction of the newest members of the Marlins Athletic Hall of Fame, honoring individuals and a championship team whose achievements have helped shape our proud athletic legacy.
Preparing students for lives of purpose also means responding to the evolving needs of our region. Throughout November, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation will bring environmental advocacy workshops to campus, helping students and staff develop advocacy skills and learn about the challenges facing our region's waterways. Participants will also have the opportunity to earn a certification from the Foundation.
November also provides an opportunity to express our gratitude to those who have served our nation. On Veterans Day, we will gather at our Veterans Memorial Monument to honor our military veterans, with Captain Chad K. Upright, Commanding Officer of the Hampton Roads Naval ROTC Consortium, delivering the keynote address.
I am also thankful for those who invest their time and talents in preparing our students for success. Our student-led Marlin Business Conference returns November 16–19 with the theme "Creating Careers." University Trustee Dr. William L. "Bill" Murray, SVP of Corporate Affairs and Communications at Dominion Energy, will deliver the opening keynote address. The conference connects students with business leaders, career pathways, and professional experiences that complement their classroom education.
Looking ahead, we will celebrate our graduates at Winter Commencement on December 12, with Virginia Attorney General Jay Jones delivering the keynote address. Looking further ahead, the Rev. Stephanie Kimec Parker ’08 will return to her alma mater as our Spring 2027 Baccalaureate speaker. Both occasions celebrate the accomplishments of our students and the values of leadership and service that guide their futures.
This Thanksgiving, I am especially grateful for each of you. Your dedication, friendship, and continued support strengthen our University and create opportunities for our students. On behalf of the Batten University community, I wish you and your loved ones a wonderful Thanksgiving. Sincerely, |
