News from the Baltimore Ravens

VWC grad Ryan Monastra Named Rookie of the Year by Baltimore Ravens -- It is not every day that a team can claim one of its alumni received a major award from a professional sports franchise, but that is exactly what happened to the Virginia Wesleyan cheerleading squad recently.

Ryan Monastra, a 2009 graduate from Virginia Wesleyan and collegiate cheerleader, was recently named Rookie of the Year of the Baltimore Ravens cheer squad, an award that speaks to the skill level and potential of the former Marlin.

"Thank you Virginia Wesleyan College cheerleading," Monastra said. "It has been an incredible journey indeed, and I would never have had this opportunity without your support so many years ago when this journey began. So, again, thank you...and Go Marlins!!!"

Head Coach Desiree Ellison said that she is looking forward to having Monastra back on campus. With so many teams having alumni functions this weekend as part of Hall of Fame festivities, Ellison said that Ryan will be back on campus as well for cheerleading alumni activities.

He will be at practice Friday night and will be with the team Saturday during the men's and women's basketball games.
