Nota Bene: An Invitation from Norfolk Collegiate

November 6, 2015

This morning, I write to share an invitation to a professional development opportunity we have received from the Headmaster of Norfolk Collegiate School, Scott Kennedy.

Pat Bassett, a visionary thinker and inspirational speaker, will be visiting Norfolk Collegiate November 8-10. While there, Pat will also be presenting Schools of the Future – Big Shifts on Monday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. in the Hackney Theater. This evening of insightful conversation will include a discussion of the “big shifts” in education, including:

·         From knowing to doing
·         From teacher-centered to student-centered
·         From individual to the team
·         From consumption of information to construction of meaning
·         From schools to networks
·         From single sourcing to crowd sourcing

Formerly an independent school teacher, adjunct college professor, independent school head and association president, Pat currently serves as consultant and strategist for schools and other nonprofits at Heads Up Educational Consulting LLC.

Pat began his career in independent schools in 1970 as an English teacher, lacrosse coach and dorm parent at Woodberry Forest School. In 1980, he became headmaster of Stuart Hall, an all-girls school, where he remained until 1989. He then was appointed head of school at Pomfret School in Connecticut. From 1993-2001, Pat served as the president of the Independent Schools Association of the Central States. He is also an adjunct faculty member of Teachers College, Columbia University.

Pat has served on the board as a trustee of NAIS (1985-89), the Multicultural Alliance (1994-2000), the Council for Spiritual and Ethical Education (since 1996), the Council for American Private Education (since 2001). In June of 2010, Pat was appointed to the board of trustees of Williams College.

Professional recognitions include being named a Kellogg National Leadership Fellow in 1986, and having received the Educational Leadership Award in 2000 from the Klingenstein Center of Teachers College and global leadership awards from the European Council for International Schools and the Near East South Asia Council of Overseas Schools.
A Phi Beta Kappa, magna cum laude graduate of Williams College, Pat also holds a master's degree in film studies from Northwestern University. He and his wife, Barbara, have two daughters and two grandchildren living in Boulder, Colorado.
We’ve been asked to respond to Norfolk Collegiate to let them know if you plan to attend.
