Nota Bene: Readings With Wesleyan

November 5, 2015

The final segment in this semester’s Readings With Wesleyan series, themed “Topics in Early Childhood Education,” will take place this evening at Enoch Baptist Church in Virginia Beach (6:30 p.m.). Associate Professor of Education/Special Education Jayne Sullivan will present “Educational Toys and Games: Which Should I Choose and Why?” Adults of all ages—particularly residents of our nearby Lake Edward area—are invited to "play” educational games, and learn about the research behind the fun.

Jayne’s presentation follows two prior October discussions: “Easy Answers to Tough Questions that Will Inspire Your Child to Think Scientifically,” presented by Assistant Professor of Education Bill McConnell, and “Beyond Finger Paints: Art Projects for Kids,” presented by Professor of Art Phil Guilfoyle.

Many thanks to these professors, and to all faculty, staff and volunteers, who have put their expertise and support toward this extremely important initiative.

Readings With Wesleyan was launched in July 2014 as part of Virginia Wesleyan’s Western Bayside College-Community Partnership. The neighborhood educational partnership, sponsored by the College’s Center for Innovative Teaching and Engaged Learning (INTEL), brings free college-level teaching to area residents. Participants study literature, art history, moral philosophy, American history, and more. Previous Readings With Wesleyan themes have included: “Engaging the American Dream,” "Community Transformations," and "World Religions 101."

Community service and outreach are at the foundation of our Wesleyan heritage. As our Mission states, “Virginia Wesleyan aspires to be a supportive community that is committed to social responsibility, ethical conduct, higher learning and religious freedom.” It is through programs like Readings With Wesleyan that we honor and encourage these core values.

Very special thanks to Kathy Stolley, Associate Dean of Innovative Teaching and Engaged Learning, for her continued leadership and commitment to Readings With Wesleyan. Please join us this evening as we conclude the series for the semester.
