WVBC Radio: A Bethany Tradition

Good morning,

In 2015, WVBC radio celebrates 50 years as the voice of Bethany College. WVBC Radio is a student-operated online station at Bethany College and a member of the Bethany Broadcasting Network (BBN). WVBC studios are located at Bethany House.

For many years, WVBC has provided students with the “on-air” and “behind the scenes” skills to prepare them for the competitive world of communications. WVBC is a live web-streamed station, provided by Stretch Internet. Student programming includes a variety of promotions, coverage of live events, live remotes and radio-show visits by alumni, many of whom began right here at Bethany on WVBC. “Everything I used to get my first radio job, I learned at WVBC,” said the 1982 Student Station Manager George Manahan ’83, of his experience at WVBC.

The station offers specials like Dr. Larry Grimes’ Ghost Stories and holiday celebrations. The station is also involved in the Bethany community, LIVE-STREAMING College and Town public-service events like Relay for Life, American Red Cross Blood Drives, Farmer's Markets, and Greek activities. All of the equipment and studio spaces were updated in 2012. From paint to carpeting, microphones, sound board, mixers, and the addition of the Arrakis system, the radio station is nearly brand new for being 50 years old. The on-air station was refigured to host multi-mic interviews and bands, and will be using a webcam to stream live shows on BCTV next fall.

WVBC has a student music, news and sports staff that consists of about twenty students each semester, including some January Terms. Each of the three areas have student leaders who are responsible for overseeing the other students.

The radio station has a social media presence on Facebook and Twitter. Dr. Patrick Sutherland is the faculty advisor.
